A Master Gardener is an individual who acts on behalf of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) as a volunteer educator within his or her community after receiving specialized training in environmental horticulture through cooperative programming with ACES. These volunteer educators serve as partners with the local Cooperative Extension System to promote, inform, and work with communities, leaders, industry, and individuals presenting programs on all aspects of horticulture to protect and enhance the environment, including turf, landscape, vegetables, trees and shrubs, and pest management practices.

LEVELS OF MASTER GARDENER STATUS
There are five (5) levels of MG status in MGNA. Each status level is determined by level of training and community volunteer service.

1. MASTER GARDENER INTERN: One who is currently in classroom training to become a MG but has not yet satisfactorily completed all course requirements.

2. MASTER GARDENER PROVISIONAL MEMBER: One who has satisfactorily completed the MG program classroom-training requirement, achieved 70 percent or better cumulative average on examinations, and is currently fulfilling the initial volunteer experience requirement of 50 hours educational efforts/work time.

3. MASTER GARDENER ACTIVE MEMBER: One who has completed the full MG program – Intern and Provisional – is eligible to become an Active member of MGNA. This is an individual who is actively volunteering with MGNA, fulfilling the program requirements necessary to remain active. To become and remain an Active member, one must pay annual dues and complete annual requirements for volunteer and continuing education service.

4. ADVANCED MASTER GARDENER: One who has received specialized training in any of the advanced-level MG training programs and has completed the program requirements. Advanced training may be completed in a variety of areas. However, all programs must be developed in cooperation with the Cooperative Extension Agent responsible for the MG program before any studies are begun.

5. MASTER GARDENER ASSOCIATE MEMBER: A certified MG, who is no longer able to perform annual volunteer hours or to earn CEUs due to health or other reasons, may choose to become an Associate member. This individual must pay annual dues but will not have voting rights and may not hold office.

6. IN-STATE MASTER GARDENER TRANSFER: An Alabama Certified Master Gardener from another county may join MGNA by providing proof of State certification and paying annual dues. Extension may recommend that classes related to soils and other regional topics be audited.

7. OUT-OF-STATE MASTER GARDENER TRANSFER: Master Gardeners from other states may join MGNA provided they audit the Alabama Master Gardener course. Upon completion of the course, they are eligible for Active membership in MGNA.

8. HONORARY MEMBERSHIP: Honorary membership may be bestowed upon individuals who have distinguished themselves through ongoing and outstanding service to MGNA. The Executive Board shall nominate deserving individuals for honorary membership. When presented for membership at an MGNA meeting, a two-thirds (2/3) vote of attending members is required for confirmation. An honorary member shall enjoy all the privileges of an active member, except voting rights and holding office, and shall be exempt from the payment of dues. Honorary Members shall receive a certificate and an appropriate Master Gardener nametag.

Steps to MGNA Active Membership
1.   Enroll in Master Gardener classes.
2.   Participants in the MG classes are INTERNS until they have completed the 13-week course of study.
3.   Interns who have satisfactorily completed the Master Gardener instructional program automatically become PROVISIONAL MEMBERS of MGNA. This status may not exceed one calendar year from date the instructional program ends. When the volunteer service requirements are fulfilled, Provisional membership ends, and the individual becomes eligible for Active membership. (The completion of volunteer service requirements must be reported to the coordinating Regional Extension Agent.)
4.  Individuals who have successfully completed the Master Gardener instructional program and have fulfilled the volunteer service requirements are eligible to become ACTIVE MEMBERS in MGNA.
