Master Gardener Interns

Interns are Master Gardeners in Training!

Individuals are considered Master Gardener Interns for the first year following their completion of the Master Gardener Training course.  The intern year gives current and recent course attendees opportunities to extend their classroom learning and report the 50 hours of approved volunteer service required for Certification as an Alabama Master Gardener.

A few important notes about your first fifty hours...
  • Of your 50 hours, 10 must be served at the Madison County Extension Office at the Master Gardener Help Desk and another 10 must be served in a garden environment;  such as the Demonstration Vegetable Garden and/or the Morris Elementary Greenhouse.
  • Your first fifty hours (served as a Master Gardener Intern) are not included in your total lifetime hours as a Certified Master Gardener.
Master Gardener Service Login Site  The secure site is often referred to as "The Auburn Database" because really, that's what it is! The online site is a database of Alabama Master Gardeners and the hours each logs as volunteers in our communities and as a learning community when we participate in Continuing Education activities. The site is maintained, secured and updated by the University of Auburn and updated by volunteer (Master Gardener) administrators. Only Interns and Master Gardeners can access the site.  Log in instructions are provided to interns as part of the Training Course, along with specific instructions on how to enter your initial hours.
  • If you need assistance with your login details, you may contact your local, MG Auburn Database Administrator by emailing Deen Rice:
  • How to enter hours in the MG Volunteer Service Site (compliments of Shoals MG, once you log into site, the process is very similar)
Absolutely! Interns are always welcome to attend Master Gardener association meetings, state conferences, workshops and events. Once you become a certified Master Gardener, you will be invited to join a Master Gardener Association in the county where you reside, you can also hold membership in any Master Gardener Association you choose.
